The Iron Woman

epub

Out of the sludge of a polluted swamp rises a huge, terrifying figure: the Iron Woman, about to vent her wrath on the people who are destroying the land. Young Lucy, whose father works at a factory that contaminates the water, is the first to see the giant and tries desperately to reason with the great avenger. Lucy remembers hearing of another giant creature who also visited the earth, and about the boy, Hogarth, who befriended him. Soon she and Hogarth and the Iron Man all try to save the people from the Iron Woman's vengeance.

New and Selected Poems

This volume replaced Ted Hughes's Selected Poems 1957-1981. It contains a larger selection from the same period, to which are added poems from more recent books, uncollected poems from each decade of Ted Hughes's writing life, and some new work. Another notable feature is the inclusion of poems from his books for younger readers, What is the Truth? and Season Songs.

The Iron Man

First published in 1968, The Iron Giant is a modern fantasy about a massive giant who stalks the earth devouring metal, terrifying farmers and townspeople everywhere. Despite his insatiable hunger, the Iron Giant is quite gentle and good-natured, though the townspeople are too frightened of him to realize it. So they capture him and put him in a scrapyard, where he happily stuffs himself with stoves and bicycles. The people forget about the Iron Giant until a space-bat the size of Australia hovers over the earth, poised to destroy it. Earth needs a hero and only the Iron Giant is big enough and brave enough to do battle with the hideous creature from outer space. With a tractor-eating...

'The poem we are told was originally intended as a film scenario. Ted Hughes has that sure poetic instinct that heads implacably for the particular instances rather than ideas or abstraction; he has an especial talent for evoking the visual particular . . . Ted Hughes has produced a strange bastard form that [works] because he has such an acute sense of the suggestive power of specific visual images and the ability to evoke them in words.' Oliver Lyne, Times Literary Supplement The passion of the writing in this volume has been described as delivering the sensation of a line writing itself in front of the reader's eyes.
